Counseling can provide support, new ways of coping, improved functioning in daily life, improved relationships, create more functional behavior and reduce distress.
According to the Utah Mental Health Counselors Association "In today's managed care environment, mental health counselors are uniquely qualified to meet the challenges of providing high quality care in a cost-effective manner. Mental health counselors provide flexible, consumer-oriented therapy. They combine traditional psychotherapy with a practical problem solving approach that creates a dynamic and efficient path for change and problem resolution."
The previous title Licensed Professional Counselor or LPC has been changed to Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CMHC) to better reflect the clinical skills and emphasis on health that is included in the education and training of these professionals. CMHCs have more education in diagnosis and assessment than other counseling professions and work to promote optimal wellness.
Counseling can be short term to help cope with daily stress or longer term for people who face significant distress.
